Belts Drive vs Direct Drive

Belt systems are economical to manufacture however they must be maintained and adjusted frequently. The Mastodon direct drive never has to be adjusted for the life of the attachment and there is no rubber to wear out.

Does the belt absorb "shock loads".

No. The hydraulic system is what absorbs the shock loads. The Mastodon direct drive not only absorbs the shock loads, it also has no maintenence.

How often do I adjust a belt drive?

A mulcher with a belt drive must be adjusted every 50 hours and if it is too loose it will damage the belt, if it is too tight it will damage the bearings. In 1 year operating a belt drive mulcher the owner will adjust it 42 times. In 1 year operating a Mastodon the owner will adjust the drivetrain 0 times.

Can I run the drum backwards.

Yes, the drum can operate in reverse if needed to unclog the drum during mulching.
